Lockheed L1649A "Super Star"

The first "Super Star" of Lufthansa took off in 1958. After it's restauration it will raise again.

02/2009 | Hamburg overhauls Super Star landing gears

The main and nose landing gears of the Super Star arrived well packed in the landing gear shop of Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg in December after being flown in from Auburn, Maine. Over the next few months they will be restored to health here, ready for future flying operations in the service of the Lufthansa Berlin-Stiftung.
The preliminary rough inspection and completeness check of the components supplied from the USA will shortly be followed by a full overhaul. After being completely taken part, the landing gears will be cleaned and inspected for cracks before being assessed for dimensional accuracy and corrosion as in a normal overhaul. The L-1649A core team in the Hamburg landing gear shop will then reassemble the parts back into complete landing gear sets before they are returned, duly certificated by the FAA and EASA, to Auburn for installation in the Super Star.

The work of taking the three landing gears apart is scheduled to finish in April, with the overhaul work due to be completed in September of this year. The Super Star landing gears are not significantly different in their construction and the materials used from the landing gears of present-day jets.

Because the maintenance documentation for the Lockheed L-1649A is available, it will be possible for most of the repair work to be conducted as originally stipulated. Where no original instructions are known, Lufthansa Technik will prepare these itself as a licensed development organization.
